
New Delhi: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has resigned from his post, effective immediately, citing the need to “prioritise health care and abide by medical advice.” His resignation was formally submitted to the President on Monday, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution.
Dhankhar had been serving as the Vice President of India since August 2022. Before assuming the vice presidency, he was the Governor of West Bengal, a position he held from 2019 to 2022.
What Jagdeep Dhankhar Said in His Letter
In a detailed resignation letter addressed to the President, Dhankhar expressed his “deepest gratitude” for the support he received during his tenure.
“To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately,” his letter stated.
He specifically thanked the President for her “unwavering support” and the “wonderful working relationship” they shared. He also extended his appreciation to the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers, noting that the Prime Minister’s “cooperation and support have been invaluable.” He added that the “warmth, trust, and affection” from all Members of Parliament would be cherished.
Dhankhar reflected on his time in office, calling it a “privilege and satisfaction” to have witnessed and participated in India’s “remarkable economic progress and unprecedented exponential development.” He described serving during this “transformative era” as a “true honor.”
Concluding his letter, Dhankhar stated that he leaves the office “filled with pride in Bharat’s global rise and phenomenal achievements and hold unwavering confidence in her brilliant future.”
