Dharamshala: A wave of reverence swept through the Himalayan town of Dharamshala as it played host to a celebration of the Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday. Political leaders from across India assembled to pay tribute to the Tibetan spiritual leader’s enduring commitment to peace, compassion, and religious harmony.
Ahead of the milestone, the Dalai Lama addressed his followers through a message on X (formerly Twitter), reflecting on the occasion and sharing a heartfelt appeal. “I am just a simple Buddhist monk; I don’t normally engage in birthday celebrations. However, since you are organizing events focused on my birthday I wish to share some thoughts,” he wrote.
Emphasizing the importance of inner well-being alongside material progress, he added: “While it is important to work for material development, it is vital to focus on achieving peace of mind through cultivating a good heart and by being compassionate, not just toward near and dear ones, but toward everyone. Through this, you will contribute to making the world a better place.”
Among the key attendees, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju reaffirmed the government’s stance on upholding religious freedom. “The Dalai Lama institution is purely religious and the Government of India believes there should be no interference in religious matters,” he said during the gathering.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, representing his state at what he described as a historic occasion, pushed back against foreign interference, stating that China has no authority over matters involving the Dalai Lama.
Echoing those views, Arunachal BJP President Tapir Gao described the spiritual leader as “an institution of love, peace, and compassion,” and called on the global community to embrace Buddhist culture without yielding to Chinese pressure.
Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan Singh) also honored the Dalai Lama’s lifelong dedication to non-violence, remarking, “We have come here to pay respects for his lifelong struggle for peace. The government does not interfere with religion and faith.”
Leading the nation’s well-wishers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a warm message: “I join 1.4 billion Indians in extending our warmest wishes to His Holiness the Dalai Lama on his 90th birthday. He has been an enduring symbol of love, compassion, patience and moral discipline. His message has inspired respect and admiration across all faiths. We pray for his continued good health and long life.”
The celebration not only marked a personal milestone for the Dalai Lama but also reaffirmed India’s enduring respect for his message and his role as a global spiritual leader.
