India Installs First Onboard ATM in Mumbai-Manmad Express | WATCH Video

In a pioneering move, Indian Railways has introduced the country’s first onboard ATM service in the Mumbai-Manmad Panchavati Express. The ATM, installed inside an air-conditioned coach, enables passengers to withdraw cash even while the train is in motion.

The facility is part of the Indian Railways’ Innovative and Non-Fare Revenue Ideas Scheme (INFRIS) and is a collaborative effort between the Bhusawal Railway Division and the Bank of Maharashtra. During initial trial runs, the machine performed smoothly across most sections of the route. However, brief connectivity issues were reported between the Igatpuri and Kasara stretch, largely due to poor mobile network signals in tunnels. Authorities have assured that measures will be taken to address these signal issues.

Speaking to IANS, Divisional Railway Manager of Bhusawal, Ity Pandey, confirmed that the trials were successful and that passengers will now have access to cash while traveling. “We will continue to monitor the machine’s performance,” she added. The idea was first proposed during an INFRIS brainstorming session within the Bhusawal division and was swiftly developed into a functional project.

ATM Access for All Coaches

Despite being installed in an AC coach, the ATM is accessible to all passengers across the 22 coaches of the Panchavati Express, thanks to interconnecting vestibules. Apart from dispensing cash, the machine also allows users to request cheque books and view account statements.

This ATM service will also be available on the Mumbai–Hingoli Jan Shatabdi Express, which shares the same rake with the Panchavati Express. To ensure passenger security, the ATM is equipped with a secure shutter and is monitored round-the-clock by CCTV cameras. Railway officials stated that if the service gains popularity, it could be extended to other trains in the future.
