The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Gujarat, warning of extreme heatwave conditions in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and other districts. The prolonged heatwave has pushed temperatures above 44°C for five to six consecutive days, exceeding the typical three-day heatwave duration seen in April.

Ahmedabad recorded the highest temperature in the state at 46.6°C, which is 4.7°C above normal, while Gandhinagar followed at 46°C, a departure of 3.7°C. Other affected regions include Surendranagar, Kutch, Morbi, Bhavnagar, Rajkot, and Vadodara. This year’s heatwave is among the longest recorded in recent years, surpassing previous records such as 47°C in May 2016.
To protect workers from the harsh conditions, the Gujarat government has implemented measures under the Building and Other Construction Workers Act of 1996. Construction work is prohibited between 1 PM and 4 PM, with penalties for non-compliance. Workers can report violations via a helpline number.
The IMD attributed this early onset of extreme heat to a western disturbance and anti-cyclonic circulation system affecting the region. The department emphasized that temperatures across Gujarat are expected to remain high for the next few days, posing significant risks to health and safety.
