IIM Calcutta Rape Case: Accused Granted Bail as Complainant Remains Unreachable

Kolkata – A second-year MBA student from the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIM-C), accused of rape, was granted bail by the Alipore Court in West Bengal on Saturday, according to a report by news agency ANI. The court’s decision came after noting that the complainant has been unresponsive and has not assisted in the ongoing investigation.

The accused, previously held in seven-day police custody, was released upon posting a bail bond of ₹50,000. The incident, which allegedly occurred inside the boys’ hostel on the IIM-C campus, was reported last Friday when the complainant, associated with the institute, filed a First Information Report (FIR) at Haridevpur Police Station. The FIR led to the student’s arrest the following day.

The complainant alleged that she was sexually assaulted by the accused within the hostel premises. However, her lack of cooperation, including failure to appear for statements or further investigation, was cited by the court as a key factor in granting bail to the accused, ANI reported.
