Bengaluru : Karnataka Home minister G Parameshwara said the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) wanted the event, and the government facilitated it, amid the outrage over the stampede in which eleven people died and 47 others were injured on Wednesday.
“Chief Minister has already said there would be a magisterial inquiry into the incident. The RCB and the cricket association (KSCA) wanted this ceremony and we said we would facilitate,” Parameshwara told the media. We didn’t make any request regarding the celebration to RCB and KSCA. They organised this. We felt that the government should felicitate. Just because it was a Bengaluru team, we felt that we should be a part of the celebration. That’s all. We didn’t ask that we would do this but it’s RCB and KSCA who brought the team to Bengaluru for celebrations.
Meanwhile, the Karnataka High Court has taken up a suo motu public interest litigation over the stampede with the hearing slated for 2:30 pm today. Stampede occurred on Wednesday evening outside M Chinnaswamy stadium where the RCB IPL team was supposed to be facilitated by the KSCA. Ambulances were seen making their way through the heavy crowd, moving the injured to the hospital. Visuals from before the beginning of the event showed people being taken for medical care as they fainted.
The state government says the stampede was caused because people were jostling to get inside the small gates, breaking the gates. Sources earlier reported that the stampede was caused by panic when a slab broke under the weight of several people standing on it outside the stadium.
