Historic Welcome in Ghana: Sacred Chants Greet PM Modi as He Deepens India-Africa Ties

Accra: Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a vibrant and historic welcome in Ghana on Wednesday, marking the first visit by an Indian premier to the West African nation in three decades. His arrival in Accra for a pivotal two-day trip was highlighted by a heartfelt gesture: young Ghanaian children chanting “Hare Rama Hare Krishna,” underscoring the profound cultural affinity between the two countries.

Modi landed at Kotoka International Airport, where he was formally greeted with a guard of honour and traditional ceremonies. Later, a special musical performance was held at his hotel, which the Prime Minister observed with visible appreciation.

This landmark bilateral visit strengthens India’s partnership with Ghana, a key player in the Global South and influential within both the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Before departing India, PM Modi expressed confidence the visit would bolster historical bonds. “I look forward to opening new avenues of cooperation in investment, energy, health, security, and development partnership,” he stated. He also highlighted the honour of addressing Ghana’s Parliament, noting both nations are “vibrant democracies.”

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Modi will hold talks with President John Dramani Mahama to enhance the robust bilateral relationship, focusing specifically on boosting economic, defence, and energy collaboration.

Following his engagements in Ghana, the Prime Minister continues his extensive tour, heading to Trinidad and Tobago (July 3–4), Argentina (July 4–5), Brazil for the 17th BRICS summit, and Namibia, furthering India’s global diplomatic outreach.
