New Delhi: Gopichand P Hinduja, Chairman of the Hinduja Group and one of the most influential figures in global business, passed away in London at the age of 85. According to reports, he breathed his last at a London hospital.
Gopichand, affectionately called “GP” in corporate circles, was the second of the four Hinduja brothers who built one of the world’s most diversified conglomerates. He is survived by his brothers Prakash and Ashok Hinduja. The eldest brother, Srichand Hinduja, passed away in 2023.
Having joined the family business in 1950, GP played a pivotal role in expanding the company’s footprint from its roots as an Indo-Middle Eastern trading firm to a global powerhouse. His leadership transformed the Hinduja Group into a multinational empire with interests spanning automotive, banking and finance, information technology, healthcare, real estate, energy, and media.
A graduate of Jai Hind College, Mumbai, Gopichand also received honorary doctorates from the University of Westminster and Richmond College, as noted on the company’s official website.
The Hinduja Group’s portfolio includes major enterprises such as *Ashok Leyland, **IndusInd Bank, and *NXTDIGITAL Limited. Under his guidance, the group became a symbol of India’s entrepreneurial success on the world stage.
In the 2025 Sunday Times Rich List, the Hinduja family was named the wealthiest in the United Kingdom, with an estimated net worth of £32.3 billion.
The family, however, was not without controversy. In 2021, a high-profile legal dispute surfaced in a London court when Srichand Hinduja’s daughters, Vinoo and Shanu, accused their uncles Gopichand, Prakash, and Ashok of excluding them from financial and strategic decisions. The brothers defended themselves by referring to a 2013 family pact asserting that “everything belongs to everyone and nothing belongs to anyone.” The disagreement led to public family rifts during a difficult period when Srichand was battling dementia.
Gopichand Hinduja’s death marks the end of an era for one of India’s most prominent business families, whose legacy continues to influence industries and economies across continents.
