Delhi Finds Respite from Heat as Rain and Thunderstorms Sweep NCR

Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms swept through Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) early Friday, offering a welcome reprieve from the intense summer heat, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The downpour, accompanied by gusty winds and hail, cooled temperatures significantly but disrupted flight operations and caused waterlogging in several areas.

The IMD had issued a yellow alert for Delhi, forecasting heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds for the next three days. Social media platforms, particularly X, buzzed with reactions as residents shared images and videos of the stormy weather, expressing both surprise and relief. The IMD’s weekly forecast indicates that thunderstorms and rain will persist through Saturday, potentially lowering temperatures further.

Flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport faced significant disruptions, with over 40 flights diverted and nearly 100 delayed, as reported by Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL). Air India issued a statement on X, noting that thunderstorms and gusty winds had delayed some flights, impacting overall schedules. The airline urged passengers to check with their respective carriers for updates. DIAL also advised travelers to monitor flight statuses due to the ongoing weather conditions.

The IMD’s alert highlighted the risk of strong winds and hail, warning of potential damage to trees, power lines, and crops, as well as partial damage to vulnerable structures. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited rain-affected areas, including Majnu Ka Tilla and ITO, to assess the situation and coordinate relief efforts. Waterlogging was reported in multiple locations, snarling traffic in parts of the city.

Despite the disruptions, the rainfall provided much-needed relief after days of scorching heat, with temperatures previously reaching as high as 42°C. The IMD recorded a minimum temperature of 26.8°C on Friday, slightly above the seasonal average, with a maximum expected to settle around 37°C.
