G Parameshwara Clarifies ‘ Molestation Happens In Big Cities’ Remark, Says Statement Was Twisted

A day after his comment on the Bengaluru sexual assault case drew criticism, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara issued a clarification on Tuesday, saying his words were misunderstood and taken out of context. “I want to give a clarification. No one has understood what I said yesterday. I am always for the protection of women,” Parameshwara said, adding that he has implemented several schemes during his tenure to ensure women’s safety.

His clarification comes after his remark on Monday, “Such incidents happen in all big cities.” sparked outrage, with many accusing him of being insensitive. “Incidents like these tend to happen here and there in a big city like this. Whatever legal action needs to be taken will be done in accordance with the law. I have also instructed our commissioner to increase beat patrolling,” G Parameshwara had said.

The comment was made in reference to a molestation case reported from Bengaluru’s BTM Layout, where a woman was sexually assaulted on the street late at night. Parameshwara said his words were “twisted” and added, “It doesn’t look good. My statement should not be twisted. I express regret if any of our mothers, sisters and women were hurt by what I said.
