Popular folk singer Maithili Thakur formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday in Patna, ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections. She was welcomed into the party by state president Dilip Jaiswal.
Speaking to PTIafter the announcement, Thakur said, “I will do whatever the party asks me to. Contesting the election is not my goal; I will serve in any capacity the party assigns. I have witnessed the development brought about by the NDA in Bihar.”
Earlier this week, the singer had hinted at her readiness to enter politics and even contest in the upcoming polls if BJP chose her as a candidate. She highlighted her strong connection to the districts of Madhubani and Darbhanga. “My grandmother’s village is in Madhubani and my maternal grandmother’s village is in Darbhanga people from both places love me equally. But the final decision will be the party’s,” she said.
According to Hindustan Times, Thakur’s ancestral home is in Benipatti block of Madhubani district. She also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi as her favourite leader, saying, “I have been listening to his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ and speeches for years they have always inspired me.”
Voting for Bihar’s 243 Assembly seats will be held in two phases November 6 and November 11 with results to be declared on November 14. The BJP has already released its first list of 71 candidates.
