Electoral Roll Allegations : Delhi Court Junks Plea Seeking Probe Against Sonia Gandhi

New Delhi : A Delhi court on Thursday dismissed a complaint that sought registration of an FIR against Congress leader Sonia Gandhi over allegations related to her name in the voter list before she became an Indian citizen. The complaint was filed by a lawyer, who urged the court to direct registration of an FIR and sought directions to police to investigate the matter.
The complainant alleged that Gandhi’s name was included in the voters’ list in 1980 and then deleted in 1982. The complainant argued that Gandhi formally acquired Indian citizenship on April 30, 1983, yet her name appeared in the 1980 Delhi voters’ roll. The BJP also alleged that Congress MP Sonia Gandhi’s name appeared on the electoral rolls three years before she became an Indian citizen as it clapped back at the opposition’s claims of voter fraud in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
Former Union Minister and BJP MP Anurag Thakur, addressing a press conference, claimed Sonia Gandhi, who was born in Italy, was added to the voter list in 1980, three years before she became an Indian citizen. A person who is not a citizen of India is not eligible for registration on the electoral rolls.
