Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, reacting to the Mahagathbandhan’s heavy defeat in the 2025 Bihar Assembly election, thanked voters who backed the alliance but alleged that the contest was compromised right from the beginning. In a post on X, he said the result was “truly surprising” and claimed the Opposition could not win “an election that was not fair from the very beginning.”
Gandhi framed the Bihar verdict as a setback that demands serious introspection within the Congress and the wider INDIA bloc. He said the alliance would “deeply review” the outcome and redouble efforts in what he described as a larger struggle to “protect the Constitution and democracy,” stressing that the fight would continue with even greater intensity.
Despite the NDA, led by the BJP and JD(U), heading for a historic win and the Congress logging one of its poorest tallies in Bihar since 2010, Gandhi sought to underline the support the Mahagathbandhan still received. He expressed “heartfelt gratitude” to the “millions of voters” who had reposed faith in the alliance and signalled that the party’s next steps would be shaped by a detailed internal review of what went wrong on the ground.
Other Congress leaders also issued strong and candid reactions, with several calling the result “unexpected” and “unacceptable” and pointing to organisational and strategic failures. Together, their responses highlight mounting unease within the party over its performance in Bihar, even as the NDA consolidates a three-fourth majority and the INDIA bloc is left to reassess its approach in one of the country’s most politically crucial states.
