Fadnavis Rejects Modi Succession Rumors, Predicts Leadership Beyond 2029

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has firmly dismissed speculation about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s successor, asserting that Modi will remain India’s leader well beyond the 2029 general elections. Fadnavis countered claims from Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, who recently suggested that Modi’s visit to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) headquarters in Nagpur signaled an impending retirement.
Fadnavis emphasized that discussions about succession are premature and culturally inappropriate. “In our tradition, it’s not right to talk about successors while the father is still alive,” he told, labeling such speculation as rooted in “Mughal culture” rather than Indian values. He reiterated his confidence in Modi’s enduring leadership, stating, “I’ve said it clearly: this isn’t the time to think about a successor because Modi will be prime minister again in 2029.”
The controversy stems from Raut’s assertion last month that the RSS, the ideological backbone of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), would determine Modi’s replacement, potentially favoring a leader from Maharashtra. Raut pointed to Modi’s March 30 visit to the RSS base as evidence of retirement discussions. However, Fadnavis rejected this narrative, and senior RSS leader Suresh ‘Bhaiyyaji’ Joshi echoed his stance, he was “unaware of any talk of replacement” regarding the prime minister.
The BJP has consistently projected Modi as its central figure, with party leaders frequently highlighting his role as the face of the 2029 elections. Fadnavis’s remarks align with this messaging, reinforcing the party’s stance that Modi’s leadership remains unchallenged. As speculation swirls, the Maharashtra CM’s statements serve as a clear rebuttal to opposition claims, setting the stage for a continued focus on Modi’s tenure in the years ahead.
