Delhi CM Attack: Police Detain Suspect’s Associate in Gujarat

New Delhi: Delhi Police have detained a friend of Rajesh Khimjibhai, the man accused of attacking Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a public hearing on Wednesday, according to officials . The associate, apprehended in Rajkot, Gujarat, allegedly transferred funds to Khimjibhai, prompting authorities to investigate a possible conspiracy behind the assault at Gupta’s Civil Lines camp office.
The attack occurred during a ‘Jan Sunwai’ event, where Khimjibhai, a 41-year-old from Rajkot, allegedly assaulted the Chief Minister. Delhi Police have charged him with attempt to murder, assault on a public servant, and obstruction under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. He was remanded to five days of police custody following his arrest. The Chief Minister’s office described the incident as a “well-planned conspiracy to kill her,” supported by CCTV footage showing Khimjibhai conducting reconnaissance near Gupta’s residence and office a day prior.
Investigators are probing Khimjibhai’s criminal history, which includes five cases in Rajkot, such as assault and violations under the Gujarat Prohibition Act. Delhi Police are also tracking ten individuals who communicated with him via calls and online chats. One suspect is being brought to Delhi, while statements from five others will be recorded in Rajkot, officials told.
Chief Minister Gupta, in a statement on X, described the attack as a “cowardly attempt” to undermine her commitment to public service. She sustained injuries to her hand and head but assured supporters of her recovery, vowing to continue her work. The investigation, involving the Intelligence Bureau and Delhi Police’s Special Cell, is examining all angles, including whether the attack was politically motivated. Additional police have been deployed at Gupta’s residence, and the Ministry of Home Affairs has been informed, according to PTI.
