Wave of Bomb Hoaxes Puts Airport Security on High Alert Across India

In the wake of a deadly explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort that claimed nine lives and wounded 30 others, Indian airports faced fresh chaos on Wednesday as a bomb threat targeted five major facilities, forcing exhaustive security sweeps.

IndiGo airlines received an alarming message via its grievance portal at 3:14 pm, warning that airports in Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Trivandrum would be “attacked within 24 hours.” The threat prompted immediate action from authorities, with bomb disposal squads and fire department personnel deploying to Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi for a multi-hour search operation.

The Bomb Threat Assessment Committee (BTAC) classified the alert as “non-specific” after evaluation. Officials noted that security measures had already been ramped up nationwide following the Red Fort blast, but protocols were intensified further in response to the new warning. Three fire tenders were rushed to the scene around 4 pm after an emergency call.

Extensive checks across the affected airports turned up no suspicious items, and the threat was ultimately declared a hoax.

The incident coincided with a separate bomb scare on an Air India Express flight traveling from Mumbai to Varanasi, adding to the day’s tensions.

“After the blast near Red Fort, security was already stepped up across airports. However, it was further strengthened after the threat. After checking, nothing was found,” an official told PTI.

These false alarms have kept security teams on edge, highlighting the ongoing challenges in managing hoax threats amid heightened vigilance. No arrests related to the messages have been reported yet, as investigations continue into the sources.
