India Faces Surge in COVID-19 Cases as Kerala Tops List

India is grappling with a renewed increase in COVID-19 cases, with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reporting 4,866 active infections as of June 5, 2025, at 8:00 AM IST. This marks a significant rise from the 4,302 cases recorded the previous day, June 4, 2025, according to data. The spike is primarily attributed to the emergence of new variants, NB.1.8.1 and LF.7, while the JN.1 strain continues to dominate. These variants are under close scrutiny as concerns grow about the resurgence of the coronavirus across the country.

Kerala is bearing the brunt of the outbreak, accounting for nearly half of India’s active cases with 1,487 infections. Delhi follows with 562 active cases, having reported 105 new infections in a single day. West Bengal is also seeing a notable uptick, with 106 new cases pushing its active tally to 538. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare continues to monitor the situation, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance as these variants drive the current wave of infections.
