Centre, Opposition Reach SIR Truce, Centre Proposes Electoral Reforms Talks On December 10

New Delhi : Amid ongoing Opposition protests over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) across 12 states during the Winter Session of Parliament, the Narendra Modi government on Tuesday said it is ready to discuss the purification of voter rolls. The Centre is ready to hold discussions on electoral reforms on December 10.

No discussion is possible on SIR. If the Opposition carries on protesting, we will continue to move forward with our bills,” government sources. The government wants the discussion on 150 years of Vande Mataram to be taken up first. The government told opposition leaders that since the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram falls on November 7, this discussion should be prioritised. But the Opposition wants the discussion on electoral reforms to be held first, and the discussion on 150 years of Vande Mataram to take place afterward.

But the Opposition wants the discussion on electoral reforms to be held first, and the discussion on 150 years of Vande Mataram to take place afterward. On the first two days of the Parliament session, both Houses have witnessed a near washout as the Opposition continues to push for an immediate discussion on SIR and the numerous Block Level Officers who died while on duty, as reported across India.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said he would hold discussions with leaders of various political parties to decide on the issue. Yesterday, I said, please don’t put timeline conditions on anything, Rijiju said. In a parliamentary democracy, there has to be dialogue and discussion, he said, adding, “There are many issues in the country. You should not undermine one issue and take up another issue. All the issues are important.

As Opposition MPs again pressed for an immediate discussion on SIR, he targeted them, saying they were venting out their anger at not being able to win elections. You cannot win elections, people don’t trust you, and you take out your anger in the House. This is not correct, he said, adding that elections are the people’s platform in a democracy. I stated yesterday also, we are ready for discussion, but we have to first meet formally. It is not right to insist on time.
