Centre extends tenure of CDS Gen Anil Chauhan till May 2026

The central government announced on Wednesday that it has extended the service tenure of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan until May 30, 2026. General Chauhan, who was originally appointed to the position on September 28, 2022, will continue to lead the armed forces in this capacity.

According to an official statement from the Ministry of Defence, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the extension on September 24, 2025. The order specifies that Gen Chauhan will remain in his role as CDS and Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs until the end of May 2026 or until further notice.

General Anil Chauhan serves as the second CDS of India, following the late General Bipin Rawat. With a distinguished career spanning decades since his commission into the Indian Army in 1981, Gen Chauhan has held several crucial command and staff positions.

His exemplary service has been recognized with multiple military honors, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal.
