Calcutta University Students Beaten Up For Speaking Bengali, Branded As Bangladeshis By Hindi-Speaking Traders

Kolkata : Tension flared in Kolkata’s Sealdah area on Wednesday night after students of Calcutta University alleged they were attacked and abused by Hindi-speaking traders. The incident began when a student from the university’s Carmichael Hostel went to buy mobile accessories from a shop under Sealdah Bridge. While bargaining, an argument broke out between the student and the trader.
The student later returned to the shop with his classmates, when surrounding traders allegedly attacked them again. Four students sustained serious injuries in the assault, and the attackers were allegedly armed with sharp weapons. The injured were given primary treatment at Medical College and Hospital.
The students subsequently lodged a written complaint at Muchipara police station and staged a protest outside, demanding the immediate arrest of all accused. Police have registered the complaint and have arrested two accused traders in relation to the case. Statements of the injured victims and students are recorded immediately. An investigation has been launched.
Since the shops were closed at midnight therefore accused traders couldn’t be questioned yet. But all the accused will be questioned today. An investigation is underway. A Bangla Pokkho leader, Garga Chatterjee, reached the spot after hearing of the incident, met the students, and spoke with the police, demanding strict action against the attackers.
