At the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the token gestures offered to the Global South on critical issues like climate finance, sustainable development, and technology access. Speaking to global leaders, Modi highlighted the persistent double standards affecting the Global South in resource distribution, development, and security matters.
The summit, hosted in the coastal Brazilian city, saw the absence of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to collaborating with BRICS nations to address these challenges constructively, emphasizing India’s dedication to prioritizing humanity’s interests over its own.
Commenting on BRICS’ recent expansion, Modi noted that the inclusion of new members demonstrates the organization’s adaptability. BRICS, initially formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, welcomed Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE in 2024, with Indonesia joining in 2025.
Modi arrived in Brazil on Saturday night as part of his five-nation tour, having already visited Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, and Argentina.
