New Delhi : The BJP on Monday launched a fresh attack on the Congress over its ‘vote chori’ allegations, saying that the party secured its highest vote share in 35 years in the 2024 elections. Congress cries ‘vote chori’, but the fact is that the Congress+ vote share in 2024 is the highest in the last 35 years.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, citing Election Commission data, recently alleged large-scale manipulation in the 2024 Lok Sabha voter rolls — including duplicate names and multiple votes — and accused the Election Commission of colluding with the ruling BJP, calling it vote chori. BJP National Spokesperson CR Kesavan, echoing Malviya’s argument, also questioned Rahul Gandhi, pointing out that the Congress had secured its highest vote share.
“Rahul Gandhi is on a witch hunt tarnishing Constitutional institutions with his votes are being stolen slander. Another BJP leader, Pradeep Bhandari, also cited the rise in the Congress’s vote share to argue that Rahul Gandhi’s allegation of ‘vote chori’ was baseless. “After the Supreme Court, even hard data exposed his claim. If ‘vote chori’ has happened, how has the Congress and its allies’ vote share increased from 39% to 41% since 1989?” he asked.
The Congress has accused the BJP of manipulating voter rolls by deleting the names of opposition supporters while adding fake or duplicate voters to benefit itself. Rahul Gandhi cited instances from states such as Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar to back his claims.
The party specifically pointed to alleged irregularities in Karnataka’s Mahadevapura constituency, where it claims over one lakh “fake votes” were added to secure a BJP victory. By taking these allegations to the public, Congress says it is seeking to expose the credibility of the Election Commission of India (ECI) and mobilise support for what it calls a fight to safeguard the country’s constitutional integrity.
The Election Commission, however, has strongly rejected the allegations, describing them as “misleading” and baseless. It has asked Rahul Gandhi to submit a sworn affidavit with documentary proof, warning that his claims would otherwise be considered invalid.
