Darbhanga, Bihar: A prominent storyteller from Bihar’s Mithilanchal region has been taken into custody following allegations of sexually exploiting a minor girl, Darbhanga police confirmed on Monday.

Shravan Das was apprehended by a Special Investigation Team from the Housing Board Colony area in Darbhanga. The operation, led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer Rajiv Kumar, involved personnel from the Women’s Police Station, Laheriasarai Police Station, and neighboring jurisdictions.

The case emerged after the victim’s mother filed a complaint at the Women’s Police Station. According to the FIR, the accused allegedly engaged in prolonged sexual exploitation of the minor under the false promise of marriage. The complaint further alleges that he coerced the victim into undergoing an abortion.

Investigators are also probing the involvement of an individual known as Mauni Baba, described as an associate and spiritual mentor of the accused. SSP Reddy stated that Mauni Baba remains absconding and efforts are underway to trace him.

“The accused is undergoing detailed interrogation. Further legal proceedings are being pursued in accordance with the law,” the SSP said.

The incident has drawn sharp political criticism. Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav on Sunday launched a scathing attack on the Nitish Kumar-led state government, alleging systemic failure in protecting women and minors in Bihar.

Yadav accused the administration of shielding criminals and maintaining silence over recent violent crimes against women in districts including Madhepura, Khagaria, and Patna. He referenced multiple cases, including the alleged gang rape and murder of a widow in Madhepura, a similar crime involving a four-year-old in Khagaria, and the rape and murder of a NEET aspirant in Patna.

In a strongly worded social media post, Yadav claimed the government has become a “reliable tool for oppressors, corrupt individuals, criminals, and rapists,” and criticized what he described as the administration’s “hypocritical silence” on crimes against women.

He also alleged that police forces were being deployed against protesters while those accused of crimes against women and children enjoyed protection. The investigation into the Darbhanga case continues.
