NDA Allies Rally Around Nitish Kumar as Bihar’s Power-Sharing Talks Gain Momentum

Patna – In the wake of the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) decisive victory in the Bihar assembly elections, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is set to step down on Monday, paving the way for a fresh administration under the coalition banner, according to a high-ranking Janata Dal (United) JDU official. This move follows the alliance’s strong mandate, with Kumar slated to convene the final cabinet session of the current government before tendering his resignation to the governor at Raj Bhavan.

Upon his return, Kumar will preside over a gathering of JD(U)’s 85 freshly elected legislators. This will precede a broader conclave of NDA lawmakers, the details of which remain pending. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), now the largest partner with 89 seats, anticipates releasing an official declaration on government formation by Sunday or Monday. Insiders indicate that NDA members will promptly choose Kumar as their leader post-announcement. An NDA spokesperson noted that the swearing-in is likely to occur on Wednesday or Thursday, marking a swift transition to the new regime.

The day unfolded with a flurry of high-level visits to Kumar’s residence in Patna, underscoring the alliance’s unity. Union minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan was among the first to confer with Kumar on the contours of the incoming setup. Over two dozen prominent figures from NDA partners, including Union minister Rajiv Ranjan alias Lalan Singh, also paid their respects.

Parallel negotiations extended to New Delhi, where all five NDA factions—BJP, JD(U), LJP(RV), Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular), and Rashtriya Lok Morcha —kicked off deliberations on Saturday. JD(U) national working president Sanjay Kumar Jha and Lalan Singh held talks with Union home minister Amit Shah, focusing on cabinet allocations and the overall framework of the next government. “Bihar’s voters have placed their trust in effective administration… The people of the state repose the greatest confidence in Nitish Kumar,” Jha remarked to journalists.

Before departing for the capital to update Shah, Jha and Lalan Singh held additional huddles with Kumar. Among the visitors to his home were JD(U)’s Jha, minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary, ex-minister Shyam Rajak, BJP ministers Nitin Nabin and Krishna Kumar Mantoo, and JD(U) state president Umesh Singh Kushwaha.

In another Patna rendezvous, Union minister of state for home Nityanand Rai engaged with RLM leader Upendra Kushwaha and his four assembly members. Rai hailed the NDA’s triumph as a “landslide success,” attributing the opposition Mahagathbandhan’s rout to the coalition’s collaborative push.

These coordinated efforts signal a seamless handover, as Bihar’s political landscape shifts toward renewed NDA governance amid high expectations for stability and progress.
