Ahead of PM Modi’s visit to Karpoori Thakur’s birthplace, the Congress accused the BJP of hypocrisy on OBC reservations. Jairam Ramesh said the Jan Sangh, BJP’s predecessor, brought down Thakur’s government in 1979 after he introduced the OBC quota, and alleged that Modi’s “trouble-engine sarkar” failed to protect Bihar’s 65% reservation law. He also reminded that Modi once called those demanding a caste census “urban naxals.”
Reacting to RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav being declared the Mahagathbandhan’s chief ministerial face, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala said the alliance’s internal rift was evident when a Congress leader close to Rahul Gandhi questioned Tejashwi’s credibility. The opposition Mahagathbandhan alliance in Bihar has reached a consensus on Tejashwi Yadav as its Chief Ministerial candidate.
Today, the alliance’s constituent parties are set to endorse his leadership, with the official announcement of his candidature. Under Tejashwi’s leadership, the alliance plans to campaign with the slogan, “Chalo Bihar… Badle Bihar.” Of the 243 seats in the assembly, the RJD and Congress are contesting 143 and 61, respectively, but both parties are headed for a “friendly fight” in at least five constituencies.
