
New Delhi : A case has been registered against six individuals, including a serving police constable, after his wife was set on fire over dowry dispute on Tuesday and left battling for life. The woman, Parul, is a trained nurse working at the Rural Health Center in Ikauna. After the incident, which occurred in Narangpur village of Amroha district, the accused family members fled and are currently absconding.
Devendra, who is a head constable in UP Police was recently transferred to Bareilly, was on a one-week leave when the incident happened. Police allege that he and his relatives attempted to burn the woman, identified as Parul, alive after their dowry demands were not met. Parul’s mother, Anita revealed that her family got to know about the incident from neighbours early on Tuesday.
Parul has been married to Devendra for 13 years and is a mother to twins, a son and a daughter. After the incident, Parul’s brother filed a complaint at the police station. This is the second such case in Uttar Pradesh in a week. Just a few days ago, a 28-year-old woman, identified as Nikki Bhati, was allegedly set ablaze by her husband Vipin and in-laws after a series of escalating dowry demands.
Nikki’s family alleges they had already provided a Scorpio SUV, a motorcycle and gold jewellery as part of the marriage arrangements. However, the demands escalated drastically, with her in-laws later insisting on Rs 36 lakh in cash and a luxury car. Disturbing video evidence, reportedly recorded by Nikki’s elder sister Kanchan, who was married in the same family, shows the victim being dragged by her hair and being beaten by her husband and mother-in-law, and eventually set on fire.
