Three Charred to Death in Fiery Bus-Lorry Collision in Andhra Pradesh’s Nandyal District

NANDYAL — A devastating road accident in the early hours of Wednesday claimed the lives of three individuals when a private bus collided with an oncoming lorry and erupted into flames in Andhra Pradesh’s Nandyal district.

The incident occurred around midnight on January 21 near Sirivella Meta on the Allagadda-Nandyal National Highway. The bus, operated by a private travel company and carrying 36 passengers from Nellore to Hyderabad, suffered a sudden tyre burst. The driver lost control, causing the vehicle to veer across the road divider and slam head-on into a lorry travelling in the opposite direction.

The forceful impact ignited a blaze that rapidly engulfed both the bus and the lorry. The three fatalities — identified as the driver of the bus, the driver of the lorry, and the lorry’s cleaner — were trapped inside the vehicles and charred beyond recognition. All 36 passengers on the bus escaped the inferno, though some sustained injuries.

A driver of a passing DCM vehicle played a crucial role in the rescue by quickly stopping at the scene and smashing the bus’s window panes to facilitate the passengers’ evacuation. Emergency services, including police and fire personnel, arrived promptly, extinguished the flames, and transported the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment. Both vehicles were completely gutted in the fire.

Roads and Buildings Minister B.C. Janardhan Reddy expressed profound shock at the mishap and directed officials to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured passengers.

The accident has once again highlighted the risks associated with tyre failures and high-speed travel on national highways. Authorities have initiated an investigation into the precise cause, including the condition of the bus tyres and other contributing factors.
