Amritsar: In a shocking incident on Sunday, Shiromani Akali Dal councillor Harjinder Singh was shot dead by unidentified assailants in broad daylight in Amritsar, Punjab. The attackers, reportedly riding a motorcycle, opened fire on him in the Chehertha area.

Police stated that five to six rounds were fired at the councillor, who represented Ward No. 2 under the Jandiala Assembly constituency. He was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries during transit.

“While Harjinder Singh was on his way, a motorcycle carrying three to four individuals approached him and opened fire. He succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital,” said ADCP Harpal Singh Randhawa. Further detailing the incident, ADCP Randhawa told ANI, “Bike-borne miscreants shot him. According to the family, 5-6 boys – Karan, Kishan, Suraj, against whom he had earlier complained that they sell drugs, are involved. They had threatened him earlier, too. 5-6 rounds were fired.”

“According to his brother and brother-in-law, the attackers were the same individuals who had previously opened fire at his residence and issued threats to him,” he added.

Senior Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia reacted strongly to the incident, claiming that Harjinder Singh had been receiving threat calls and had alerted the police. “They did nothing,” he alleged. Majithia also criticized the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government, accusing it of failing to maintain law and order in the state and calling the situation “pathetic.”
