Ahmedabad plane Crash: 80 Victims Identified, 33 Bodies Released

Three days after Air India Flight AI171 crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025, killing 241 passengers and crew and 29 people on the ground, authorities have identified 80 victims through DNA testing, with 33 bodies handed over to families. The Boeing 787, en route to London, struck a residential area shortly after takeoff, leaving remains severely damaged and complicating identification efforts at BJ Medical College and Civil Hospital.

The identification process relies heavily on DNA matching, described as meticulous by Dr. Minakshi Parikh, dean of the hospital, who emphasized accuracy. Among the identified is former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, whose body is set for release Monday, coinciding with a state day of mourning. Families, grappling with delays, expressed frustration, while the sole survivor, Vishwashkumar Ramesh, recovers in hospital.

India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, with US and UK support, is probing the crash, with a recovered flight data recorder expected to shed light on the cause, per Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu. Air India has been directed to inspect its Boeing 787 fleet, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office has pledged support to victims’ families as the nation mourns 270 lives lost.
