Modi Government Launches High-Level Probe into Air India Ahmedabad Crash

New Delhi, June 14, 2025 – In response to the devastating Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad that claimed 241 lives, the Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has established a high-level committee to investigate the tragedy. The panel, formed under the Ministry of Home Affairs, is tasked with uncovering the causes of the disaster and delivering a comprehensive report within three months.

The committee, chaired by the Home Secretary, includes senior officials from both central and state governments. Its members comprise representatives from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Gujarat Home Department, the State Disaster Response Authority, and the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner. Additional expertise is provided by the Director General of the Indian Air Force’s Inspection and Safety unit, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, the Intelligence Bureau’s Special Director, and the Director of the Directorate of Forensic Science Services.

The probe aims to enhance aviation safety protocols and prevent future incidents. The committee will have full access to critical records, including flight data, cockpit voice recorders, aircraft maintenance logs, air traffic control communications, and witness testimonies. The investigation is expected to provide a detailed analysis of the crash, which occurred on June 12 when Air India flight AI 171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner bound for London, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.

The aircraft, carrying 242 passengers and crew, plummeted into a residential area, killing all but one person on board and causing additional fatalities on the ground. The disaster, one of India’s worst aviation tragedies in decades, prompted immediate rescue operations and condolences from global leaders.

The government’s swift formation of the panel underscores its commitment to transparency and safety improvements in India’s rapidly growing aviation sector. The report, due in September 2025, is anticipated to offer critical insights into the circumstances of the crash and guide future policy decisions.
