Ahmedabad Air India Crash: 215 Victims Identified, 198 Bodies Released to Families

Ahmedabad – Authorities in Ahmedabad have made significant progress in identifying victims of the tragic Air India flight AI171 crash, which occurred on June 12, 2025. According to the sources, DNA testing has confirmed the identities of 215 individuals, with 198 bodies handed over to their families as of Friday.

The process of identifying the victims has been meticulous, with officials relying heavily on DNA analysis due to the severe condition of many remains. The crash, involving a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London Gatwick, resulted in the deaths of nearly all 242 passengers and crew, with only one survivor. The aircraft collided with a medical college hostel shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, causing additional casualties on the ground.

The identification efforts are ongoing, with forensic teams working diligently to match DNA samples provided by relatives. The Gujarat state health department has prioritized accuracy to ensure families receive the correct remains, a process that has been both time-consuming and emotionally taxing for those awaiting closure.

As the investigation into the crash continues, both black boxes the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder have been recovered. India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, with support from international experts, is analyzing the data to determine the cause of the disaster. The recovery of these devices is seen as a critical step in providing answers to the grieving families and the public.

Meanwhile, the sole survivor, a 40-year-old British man seated near an emergency exit, continues to recover, offering a glimmer of hope amid the devastation.
