A Woman Can Marry 10 Men In North alleges DMK Minister Durai Murugan

After senior Tamil Nadu minister Durai Murugan alleged that the culture in North India involved having multiple spouses and warned that those insulting Tamil would have their “tongues cut off”. Delimitation exercise added to the growing animosity between Tamilnadu and the Centre amid a language war.

Addressing a public gathering, Murugan, known for his off-the-cuff remarks, asserted that, unlike Tamil customs, North Indian traditions endorse polygamy and polyarchy. The minister alleged that North Indian culture allows “one woman to marry five or ten men”. The remark is being seen as a reference to Draupadi’s marriage to the five Pandavas in the Mahabharata.

Murugan said one man marries one woman in our culture. But in North India, one woman can marry five or 10 men. Five men can marry one woman. This is their culture. If one goes, another will come. At the centre of the row is delimitation, with Tamil Nadu apprehensive about losing representation in parliament if the exercise was to be carried out based on the latest population data.

The Senior DMK leader said that Congress and whoever ruled at the Centre asked us to control the population. We did this then and now the population has reduced. But in North India, the population did not go down. They gave birth to 17, 18, 19 children. They have no other job.
