Tragedy Strikes Simhachalam Temple: 8 Dead in Wall Collapse

A devastating incident claimed the lives of eight devotees and injured one at the Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple in Simhachalam, Visakhapatnam, when a wall collapsed during the annual Chandanotsavam festival. The collapse occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, triggered by heavy rainfall that loosened the soil, causing a tent to fall onto the wall.

The tragedy unfolded as thousands gathered to participate in the revered festival, which features the Nijaroopa darshanam, a rare viewing of the deity’s original form. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed profound grief over the loss, announcing an ex gratia payment of Rs 25 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 3 lakh for the injured. In a statement posted on X, Naidu said, “Deeply saddened by the death of seven devotees at Simhachalam… my condolences to the families. I’m closely monitoring the situation and have ordered continuous review and support for victims.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed his condolences via X, stating, “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to the collapse of a wall in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.” Naidu has ordered a thorough investigation, forming a three-member committee comprising an IAS officer, a Roads and Buildings department official, and an Endowments Department official to probe the incident.

The Chandanotsavam festival, a significant event in Andhra Pradesh’s spiritual calendar, draws large crowds to the Simhachalam temple. This year’s celebration was marred by the tragic loss, casting a shadow over the festivities. Authorities are now focusing on providing support to the victims’ families and ensuring a detailed inquiry to prevent future incidents.
