4 Indian Nationals Killed in Road Accident in Southern Italy

Four Indian citizens lost their lives in a road accident in southern Italy’s Matera city, the Indian Embassy in Rome confirmed on Sunday.

According to Italian news agency ANSA, the victims were travelling in a seven-seater Renault Scenic with six others when their vehicle collided with a truck in Scanzano Jonico, located in the Agri Valley area of Matera, on Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Kumar Manoj (34), Singh Surjit (33), Singh Harwinder (31), and Singh Jaskaran (20).

In a statement shared on social media, the Indian Embassy expressed condolences, saying, “The Embassy of India deeply condoles the tragic death of four Indian nationals in a road accident in Matera in southern Italy. We are in contact with the local Italian authorities to obtain details. Embassy will provide all possible consular assistance to the concerned families.”

ANSA reported that five of the injured were taken to Policoro Hospital in Matera, while one critically injured person was transferred to San Carlo Hospital in Potenza. The truck driver was reported to be unharmed.

Authorities from the Matera Public Prosecutor’s Office have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
