
Mumbai : Heavy rain since Friday night lashed Mumbai, flooding roads, disrupting daily life, and claiming two lives, officials said on Saturday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded its warning and issued a red alert for Mumbai.
Two people were killed and two were injured when a landslide hit a residential society in Varsha Nagar, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. Rescue teams are at the scene to clear debris. Waterlogging was reported in several neighbourhoods, including Sion, Kurla, Chembur and Andheri. On Shanmukhanand Hall Road in Sion, about one to one-and-a-half feet of water accumulated.
Civic bodies authorities also shut the Andheri subway due to flooding, affecting commuter movement. In the 21 hours between 8:30 a.m. Friday and 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Vikhroli recorded 248.5 mm of rain, followed closely by Santacruz (232.5 mm) and Sion (221 mm).
Overnight, heavy downpour was recorded between 11 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Saturday. Marol Fire Department in the western suburbs reported 216 mm of rain, followed by Santacruz’s Nariyalwadi School at 213 mm, and Tagore Nagar School in Vikhroli at 213 mm. Other spots, including Dadar Fire Department and Worli Seaface, logged more than 130 mm in just five hours.
The IMD has cautioned residents to remain alert as heavy rain is likely to continue in Mumbai and surrounding areas in the next few hours. Flight operations at Mumbai airport were also affected. IndiGo Airlines issued an advisory urging passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport.
