1,563 Indians Deported from U.S. Since Trump’s Second Term Began: MEA

New Delhi: Since Donald Trump resumed office as U.S. President on January 20 this year, a total of 1,563 Indian nationals have been deported from the United States, according to data released by India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday. “Since 20 January of this year, till yesterday, some 1,563 Indian nationals have been deported from the United States so far. Most of these Indian nationals have come by commercial flight,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during a press briefing.
The latest figures reflect a continuation of the deportation trend seen during Trump’s previous tenure from 2017 to 2021, when 6,135 Indian nationals were sent back. The peak occurred in 2019, with 2,042 deportations. Other yearly totals include 1,024 in 2017, 1,180 in 2018, and 1,889 in 2020. By comparison, under President Joe Biden’s administration, deportations of Indian nationals dropped significantly to about 3,000.
Trump’s earlier term was marked by a wide-ranging crackdown on undocumented immigrants. Reuters reported that in Trump’s first month in office in 2017 alone, the U.S. deported 37,660 migrants. Sources have indicated that the U.S. has compiled a list of approximately 18,000 undocumented Indians who may face deportation in the future.
