Amritsar: A major tragedy has unfolded in Punjab’s Amritsar, where at least 14 people have died and six others remain in critical condition after consuming spurious liquor in the Majitha area, as per the reports. The incident has sent shockwaves across five affected villages and prompted swift action from the Punjab government.
Authorities have arrested five individuals believed to be involved in the illicit liquor racket, including the alleged kingpin behind the operation. “We received information around 9:30 PM last night that people were dying after consuming spurious liquor. We took immediate action and rounded up four people. We arrested the main supplier, Prabhjeet Singh,” said SSP Amritsar Maninder Singh.
During interrogation, Prabhjeet Singh reportedly disclosed the name of another key player in the supply chain. “We have rounded him up as well. We are investigating which firms he has purchased this liquor from,” the SSP added, referring to Sahab Singh, identified as a major supplier.
Law enforcement officials are actively conducting raids to track down other individuals and companies linked to the distribution and manufacture of the fake liquor. The investigation is being treated with utmost urgency.
“We have received strict instructions from the Punjab government to take strong action against suppliers of spurious liquor. Raids are underway, and the manufacturers will be rounded up soon. Two FIRs have been registered under stringent sections. The civil administration is also involved, and we are going door to door to identify more people who may have consumed the liquor, in order to prevent further casualties and save lives. The incident has affected five villages,” Maninder Singh noted.
According to official sources, FIR No. 42 (dated May 13, 2025) has been filed under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 61A of the Excise Act.
