Abdul Wahab Sheikh, a 55-year-old autorickshaw driver, was struck on his head by a chunk of parapet wall, which fell from a high-rise in Kurla, killing him.
At around 9:30 on Thursday night, Abdul was walking to a nearby tea stall when a chunk of parapet wall from the B wing of Galaxy apartment fell on his head. Despite serious injuries, Abdul was still concious at the time and asked the people gathered around to take him to a hospital. He lost a lot of blood during the ride and was declared dead on arrival.
The victim’s wife, Sultana Sheikh said their youngest daughter was due to get married in December and that Abdul was working extra hard to save up for it. The victim’s son-in-law said that they put him in an autorickshaw but too much blood was lost by the time he came.
Many questions have been asked over the condition of the Galaxy apartments, with the relatives of the victim alleging that the residents had complained about cracks and falling pieces already.
Dhanaji Herlekar, assistant commissioner of L ward, said the building belonged to the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA). “We had written to them, bringing this to their notice and asking them to take necessary precautions,” he said. While another SRA official said that the building was not in a dilapidated condition. A resident of the apartment complex said that the building was due to undergo redevelopment in 6 months.
Chunabhatti police are in process of registering an FIR.
