Mumbai weather : IMD Predicts Heavy Showers and Thunderstorms Across Maharashtra

Residents of Mumbai and various districts in Maharashtra are preparing for a resurgence in monsoon rains as weather patterns shift toward increased activity. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall, along with thunderstorms, across Mumbai and its neighboring regions on August 12. A yellow alert has been activated for the city and the Konkan coastline, alerting people to the risks of lightning strikes and substantial precipitation. Meteorologists point to an incoming low-pressure system as the cause of this uptick, which is poised to deliver notable rainfall to areas including Konkan, Vidarbha, and central Maharashtra in the upcoming days.

A low-pressure zone is projected to develop over the Bay of Bengal on August 12, according to the IMD, fueling a boost in precipitation throughout the state. Following a recent lull in monsoon intensity, conditions are expected to ramp up again, with stronger showers forecast from August 12 through 14. In Mumbai, areas prone to flooding, such as Sion, Kurla, and Parel, are at greater risk of inundation. Local officials have recommended that people adjust their commuting plans to minimize interruptions to transportation systems, including roads and railways. Although no significant disruptions have occurred so far, travelers are advised to allocate additional time for journeys and steer clear of zones susceptible to water accumulation.

Intense rainfall is anticipated in the Konkan area, especially in districts like Ratnagiri, Raigad, and Sindhudurg, on August 12 and 13, with broader precipitation expected the following day. In Vidarbha, locations such as Yavatmal, Gadchiroli, Chandrapur, Nagpur, and Wardha could see heavy downpours continuing until August 15, while Buldhana and Akola might encounter moderate rain amid overcast skies. Marathwada regions, including Latur and Nanded, are set for significant showers, whereas Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Jalna may receive lighter to moderate amounts. Districts in Pune, Satara, and Sangli are likely to experience rainfall ranging from light to moderate during this timeframe.

Across northern Maharashtra, places like Nashik, Jalgaon, Dhule, and Nandurbar are expected to log light to moderate precipitation, potentially accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in isolated spots. Central Maharashtra and Marathwada could also witness scattered storm events. Vidarbha remains on alert for extensive rain, with some areas possibly facing heavy falls and turbulent weather. As these dynamic conditions are forecasted to last for five to seven days, government agencies have encouraged the public to monitor official updates closely, exercise caution in high-risk zones, and implement appropriate precautions to mitigate hazards associated with flooding.
