Mumbai Braces for Heavy Rain and High Tides as IMD Issues Orange Alert

Mumbai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and the Konkan region, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall on Wednesday. The warning comes alongside a high tide alert, with waves expected to reach up to 4.37 meters at 11:14 AM, prompting heightened vigilance along the city’s coastline. Lifeguards stationed at Mumbai’s beaches have been instructed to remain on high alert to ensure the safety of residents and tourists, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone coastal areas.

The city experienced heavy rainfall overnight on Monday, leading to waterlogging in several low-lying areas and suburbs. The Andheri subway in western Mumbai was closed due to water accumulation, causing significant traffic delays on the Eastern and Western Express Highways during peak morning hours. Local train services also faced slight disruptions, adding to commuter challenges.

According to civic authorities, high tides of 3.91 meters at 9:19 AM and 3.38 meters at 8:37 PM were recorded, with a low tide of 2.28 meters expected at 3:03 PM. The IMD’s latest update at 8:00 AM today predicts a cloudy sky with heavy rain across Mumbai and its suburbs, accompanied by occasional gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph. Rainfall data from 8:00 AM on July 22 to 8:00 AM on July 23 shows the island city recorded 47.77 mm, eastern suburbs 33.10 mm, and western suburbs 53.92 mm.

Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution, especially in flood-prone areas, and to avoid venturing near the sea during high tide periods. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and disaster management teams are on standby to address potential disruptions caused by waterlogging and heavy rainfall.
