Monsoon Mayhem: IMD Issues Red Alert for Heavy Rainfall Across India

Mumbai awoke to torrential downpours on Friday morning as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Maharashtra, signaling severe weather conditions. The IMD also forecasted heavy rainfall for West Bengal, Goa, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha, placing these states under a red alert for July 25.

The weather agency warned of “extremely heavy rainfall” in parts of East, Central, and West India over the next few days. Specifically, the IMD predicted intense precipitation in Konkan, the ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha, and Gangetic West Bengal on July 25, with Odisha facing similar conditions on the same day. Chhattisgarh is expected to experience heavy rainfall on July 25 and 26, while Madhya Pradesh is likely to see significant downpours on July 26 and 27.

In addition to the red alerts, the IMD issued orange alerts for Bihar, Jharkhand, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Madhya Pradesh, indicating a high likelihood of heavy rainfall. The agency noted that active monsoon conditions will persist along the west coast, adjoining ghat areas, and across central and eastern India for the next four days, potentially leading to widespread disruptions.
