Mumbai Braces for Increased Rainfall Over Next Three Days, IMD Forecasts

Mumbai – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted a slight uptick in rainfall across Mumbai and its surrounding areas for the next three days, following a week of heavy showers that disrupted daily life. The IMD’s Mumbai centre predicts cloudy skies with light to moderate rain or thundershowers in the city and suburbs through June 25, with temperatures expected to hover between 26°C and 32°C.

According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon has intensified across Maharashtra, with Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra likely to experience isolated heavy rainfall until June 24. The forecast aligns with recent weather patterns, as Mumbai recorded 31 mm of rain in the city, 44 mm in the eastern suburbs, and 56 mm in the western suburbs on June 17 between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM, per civic officials cited by Mid-Day. The IMD’s regional centre noted that a ‘rain band’ surrounding Mumbai has contributed to persistent showers, though no severe flooding has been reported recently.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, indicating potential for localized waterlogging and traffic disruptions. Neighboring districts like Thane, Raigad, and Palghar are under an orange alert, signaling a higher risk of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Reuters reported that the monsoon has now covered nearly all of Maharashtra, extending into parts of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.

Civic authorities remain on alert, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) actively monitoring water levels in the city’s seven reservoirs, which reached 10.19% capacity as of June 18, according to Mid-Day. The BMC has urged residents to stay cautious, particularly in low-lying areas prone to waterlogging. Local train services, which faced delays earlier this week, are being closely watched, though no major disruptions have been reported as of Sunday.

The IMD’s seven-day outlook suggests that rainfall intensity may ease slightly after June 24, but intermittent showers are expected to persist. Residents are advised to stay updated via official IMD bulletins and local news for real-time weather developments.
