Mumbai Braces for Heavy Rainfall as IMD Issues Alerts for July 4

Mumbai – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar, forecasting heavy rainfall at isolated locations on Friday, July 4. An orange alert has been declared for Raigad and Ratnagiri, signaling the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall in these districts. The IMD’s Regional Meteorological Center in Mumbai predicts persistent showers across the region, with cloudy skies and intermittent downpours expected throughout the day.

According to the IMD’s nowcast warning issued at 7 a.m. on July 4, light to moderate rain is anticipated in several Maharashtra districts, including Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Nashik, Pune, and Kolhapur, over the next three to four hours. The forecast also highlights the potential for heavy rainfall in isolated areas of the Konkan region, with very heavy showers possible in the ghat areas of south Madhya Maharashtra.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has advised residents to remain cautious, as waterlogging in low-lying areas could disrupt travel. High tides are expected to exacerbate conditions, with a 3.92-meter high tide forecast at 6:03 p.m. and a 1.63-meter low tide at 11:58 p.m. on July 4. The IMD’s bulletin, as reported, emphasizes the need for vigilance among commuters and residents in flood-prone zones.

Mumbai’s water supply lakes have seen a significant boost from recent rainfall, with the seven reservoirs supplying the city now at 46.28% capacity, according to BMC data. Bhatsa Lake holds the highest stock at 266,912 million liters, followed by Upper Vaitarna and Middle Vaitarna. The increased water levels provide some relief amid the ongoing monsoon season, which has already delivered above-average rainfall for June, as per the IMD’s monthly outlook.

Authorities urge residents to stay updated via official weather bulletins and avoid unnecessary travel during peak rainfall hours. The IMD’s forecast indicates that heavy rain will likely continue in Mumbai and surrounding districts through July 6, with orange alerts remaining in place for coastal areas like Raigad and Ratnagiri.
