Thane: A cement-laden tanker overturned near Cadbury Junction on the Mumbai-Nashik Highway on Tuesday afternoon, causing a major traffic jam on the highway. Vehicles heading towards Ghodbunder Road and Bhiwandi bore the brunt of the disruption caused by the accident.
Heavy vehicles regularly ply this stretch en route from Navi Mumbai JNPA, Bhiwandi, Nashik, and the Samruddhi Highway towards Thane, Ghodbunder, and Gujarat. Since heavy vehicles are barred from entering Majiwada Chowk in Thane, they are required to take a turn from the Majiwada flyover at Cadbury Junction to continue towards Ghodbunder or Gujarat. Because this turn is a sharp one, accidents occur here frequently. Thousands of light vehicles coming from Mumbai and Navi Mumbai also use the same route towards Thane, making this a critical traffic corridor for Thane district. The tanker overturned at this turn on Tuesday at around quarter to three in the afternoon, leading to heavy congestion.

The tanker, carrying fifty tonnes of cement, was travelling from the Mumbai-Nashik Highway towards Ghodbunder when it overturned while negotiating the turn at Cadbury Junction. This resulted in a long queue of vehicles stretching from Cadbury Junction to Nitin Company on the highway. Commuters travelling towards Ghodbunder, Bhiwandi, Majiwada, and Vasant Vihar faced severe difficulties due to the jam. Traffic police, the Thane Municipal Corporation’s Disaster Management team, and the fire brigade worked through considerable effort to right the tanker and restore normal traffic flow.
