(From our Representative)

Thane: The traffic problem in Thane is worsening day by day, with the congestion on Ghodbunder Road now affecting even the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway. To tackle Thane’s traffic woes, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has undertaken the Thane Coastal Road project. The first phase involves a 13.45-kilometer stretch between Kharegaon and Gaimukh, which is planned to be completed and opened for vehicular traffic by December 2028.

According to MMRDA, the first phase work is being carried out at a rapid pace. So far, 50% of the foundation work on the Kharegaon-Gaimukh stretch has been completed. Once this road becomes operational, drivers will get major relief from the traffic problems on Ghodbunder Road. Additionally, the distance from Kharegaon to Gaimukh, which currently takes more than 45 minutes to cover, will be reduced to just 15 minutes.

MMRDA has undertaken several infrastructure projects to address traffic problems in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Among these, the Thane Coastal Road project is being implemented on Ghodbunder Road to solve traffic issues within Thane city. The Thane Coastal Road is being constructed in two phases. The first phase includes the 13.45-kilometer stretch between Kharegaon and Gaimukh, while the second phase covers a seven-kilometer stretch from Balkum to Anandnagar.

Work on the Kharegaon-Gaimukh stretch in the first phase was started eight months ago. MMRDA announced on Friday that several important tasks have been completed during this eight-month period. With 50% of the bridge construction work completed, pier cap and I-girder installation work is currently underway.

The Thane Coastal Road will be connected to several projects including Thane Circle Metro, Saket-Amane Elevated Road, and Kasarvadavali-Kharegaon Road. This will make travel more convenient in the future. Meanwhile, MMRDA has announced that the six-lane Kharegaon-Gaimukh Thane Coastal Road-1, costing Rs 2,700 crore, is planned to be completed by December 2028. Currently, covering this distance takes more than 45 minutes. In the second phase, the draft for Balkum-Anandnagar Thane Coastal Road-2 is currently being prepared. Work will begin after the draft is completed and receives approval.
