Teen Detained After Sword Attack on Mumbai Bus Driver

A 19-year-old was apprehended in Mumbai’s Bhandup area after allegedly attacking a bus driver with a sword and damaging a BEST bus, police reported. The incident, captured on video and widely shared online, occurred late Thursday night when the teenager, angered by the driver’s refusal to stop at an unscheduled location, confronted him aggressively.

According to authorities, the accused, a local resident, boarded the bus around 11:30 PM and demanded the driver halt at a spot not designated as a stop. When the driver declined, the teenager reportedly retrieved a sword from a nearby location, returned to the bus, and struck the driver’s hand, causing minor injuries. He also slashed the bus’s tires and smashed its windows before fleeing.

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking, which operates the bus, lodged a complaint, prompting a swift police response. Officers from Bhandup station reviewed CCTV footage and local witness accounts to track down the suspect, detaining him within hours. The teenager faces charges under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for assault and vandalism, police confirmed.

A video of the altercation, initially posted on social media, showed the young man wielding the sword and threatening the driver, sparking public concern over safety on public transport. BEST officials stated they are cooperating fully with the investigation and reviewing safety protocols to prevent similar incidents.

The accused is currently in custody, and police are continuing their inquiries to determine if others were involved. The driver received medical attention and is reported to be stable
