Animal Lovers Protest in Mumbai Against Supreme Court’s Stray Dog Ruling

Mumbai: On August 11, 2025, animal rights activists and animal lovers gathered in Bandra to protest a Supreme Court ruling permitting the removal of stray dogs in Delhi. The demonstration, organized by the Stray Animal Foundation of India, saw participants rallying to protect stray dogs, arguing that the court’s decision could set a dangerous precedent for animal welfare across the country.
The Free Press Journal reported that the protest was sparked by the Supreme Court’s order, which allows Delhi authorities to relocate stray dogs deemed a public nuisance. Activists expressed concerns that this ruling might lead to similar measures in other cities, including Mumbai, threatening the safety of stray animals. The Stray Animal Foundation of India emphasized that stray dogs are an integral part of urban ecosystems and deserve protection, not displacement.
During the event, protesters held placards and chanted slogans to raise awareness about the need for humane treatment of strays. Despite the detentions, the protest remained peaceful, with participants calling for stronger animal welfare laws and better implementation of sterilization programs to manage stray populations.
“We are here to stand for those who cannot speak for themselves,” said a spokesperson from the Stray Animal Foundation of Indial. The group urged the government to prioritize non-lethal solutions, such as vaccination and sterilization drives, over removal policies.
The demonstration highlighted ongoing tensions between urban development and animal welfare in India. While some residents support stricter measures to address stray dog populations due to safety concerns, activists argue that such policies often ignore the root causes of the issue.
