Thane: Tragedy struck Kalyan on Tuesday afternoon when a slab from the top floor of a four-storey building collapsed, killing six people, including a two-year-old child, and injuring four others. The incident occurred around 2:15 PM in the Saptashrungi Building located in the Mangalaragho Nagar area. Authorities say the fourth-floor slab gave way and crashed through the lower floors, causing extensive damage and chaos.
Emergency responders from the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation’s (KDMC) fire department and the Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF) rushed to the scene, launching an intense search and rescue operation. One person is still feared trapped under the debris, and efforts to rescue them are ongoing.
The victims who lost their lives in the collapse have been identified as Namaswi Shrikant Shelar (2), Pramila Kalcharan Sahu (56), Sunita Neelanchal Sahu (38), Sushila Narayan Gujar (78), Venkat Bhima Chavan (42), and Sujata Manoj Wadi (38). Among the injured are two four-year-old children who have been admitted to local hospitals for treatment.
A senior police inspector confirmed that the entire slab had fallen from the fourth floor down to the ground, crushing parts of the structure below. The building has now been sealed off, and structural engineers are expected to carry out safety inspections after the rescue work is complete.
According to KDMC sources, the Saptashrungi Building had previously been declared “dangerous” and was slated to be vacated before the monsoon season. A notice had reportedly been issued to residents, but several families were still living in the building when the collapse occurred.
Police have filed a case and initiated an investigation into the cause of the collapse. As the rescue mission continues, the focus remains on finding any remaining survivors and ensuring the safety of nearby residents.
