Mumbai: The Thackeray-led Shiv Sena, which has been demanding a Marathi mayor for the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, has appointed a Muslim corporator as mayor in Parbhani. Syed Ikbal Khaja has assumed the position of mayor in Parbhani.
After the elections for mayor and deputy mayor were held on Wednesday, attention across the state was focused on who would become the mayor of Parbhani. In the elections held on Thursday, Shiv Sena fielded a Muslim corporator as its candidate for the mayor’s post.
While Shiv Sena has been insisting on a Marathi mayor in Mumbai, the party appointed a Muslim as mayor in Parbhani. It is being said that since more Muslim corporators were elected in Parbhani, Shiv Sena chose a Muslim corporator for the mayor’s position. Earlier in 1995, during the Yuti government, Bal Thackeray had also included Muslim MLA Sabir Sheikh in the cabinet.
In Parbhani, Shiv Sena and Congress held a majority, and both parties formed an alliance to establish power. After a joint meeting of leaders from both parties, they agreed upon Syed Ikbal Khaja’s name for the mayor’s position.
In the Parbhani Municipal Corporation elections, a total of 30 Muslim corporators have been elected. Among Thackeray’s 25 corporators, 13 are Muslims while the remaining 12 are Hindus. It is being said that due to the higher number of Muslim corporators, the party decided to make a mayor from the minority community.

The BJP had also made significant efforts to gain power in the Parbhani civic body, but their attempts failed due to insufficient numbers. To establish power in the civic body, 34 corporators were required. Congress and Shiv Sena had a combined strength of 37 corporators. Additionally, one independent and one Nationalist Congress Party corporator also extended their support to the Sena-Congress alliance. Therefore, their candidate was elected to the mayor’s post with a majority.
