Rescue Operations Continue For 2nd Day In Mumbai As 2 Feared Trapped

On Thursday, August 13, 2026, search and rescue efforts were in progress for the second day at the location of a landslide in Mumbai, where officials reported that two people were still thot to be buried beneath the rubble.

In the early hours of Wednesday, August 12, 2026, after heavy rains, a landslide slammed a row tenement near a hillock in the Sakinaka district, resulting in seven fatalities and seven injuries.

Three shanties in Gaushiya Chawl in the Ashok Nagar neighborhood of Chirag Nagar were hit by dirt and rocks from the nearby hills.

A few people were still thot to be trapped in the debris, according to the officials, but the rescue effort was still difficult because of the site’s limited access, which also prevented the deployment of heavy equipment.

According to a civic official, teams made up of members of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), fire department, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) continued the search and rescue effort at the location for a second day.

The city authority has arranged for the interim housing of the evacuated residents of nearby shanties.

According to the BMC, it has been running awareness campaigns and providing warnings in regions that are susceptible to rockfalls and landslides, especially during the monsoon.
